This year in Fourth Grade, interdependence and models are the major themes. Through exploration and discovery, the students will learn the relationships and connections between scientific concepts.
All science is connected, often by theme or by methods of inquiry. It is my goal for my students to understand interdependence and realize that the more they learn about science, the more they understand about the world and how it works. As the students learn about climate and the forces of nature, for example, they enrich their understanding of ecosystems and biodiversity. Additionally, when the class learns about Newton’s forces of motion they also gain perspective which they apply to units about simple machines, engineering and robotics.
Working in class with models and demonstration materials is an important part of Fourth Grade Science. Using and making models to demonstrate and explore scientific concepts helps make learning fun and meaningful to children. Models help students better comprehend full scale/real world concepts. Whether learning about Newtonian forces of motion, physical science or sound and light, models provide students with a rich, hands-on experience on which to anchor understanding.
