Classification
The Classification/Kingdoms of Life unit will provide the Fifth Graders with an appreciation of how scientists organize life and categorize it objectively based on physical characteristics. We will start the unit with the development of logical thinking as the students create dichotomous keys to organize life based on physical characteristics. By asking "yes" or "no" questions, the class will use the same method used in Field Identification guidebooks to identify organisms. Using this system, the class will also create their own identification keys for mythological creatures and an assortment of snack chips.
In addition, the students will learn the basic five kingdoms of life and explore how scientists classify organisms and place them into a hierarchy. The class will learn the traits of organism and use genus and species names to supplement common names of plants and animals.
Focus:
• Systems of classification to determine relationships
• Group organisms and communicate system used
• Group according to interactions and habitats
• Use classification to understand interactions, conservation, and identify/study new species
