Grading Rubric
In keeping with the Lovett Lower School evaluation and grading rubric, Fourth and Fifth Grade Science will use a 1-5 Scale to benchmark student achievement. The 1-5 scale does not reflect letter grades such the C, B or A scale. Rather, it relates to benchmarks based on appropriate grade level expectations.
KEY:
1 - Does not meet expectations
2 - Inconsistent in meeting expectations
3 - Successfully meets expectations
4 - Often exceeds expectations
5 - Far exceeds expectations
What does this mean for grading in Science?
In this rubric please keep in mind that a "3" means that a student is performing successfully at grade level. A “4” is commendable work that consistently meets and often exceeds expectations. A"5" is very rare and, in any given category, means that a student is completing amazing work and that far exceeds performance seen at the 4th or 5th grade level! A “2” is given to students who are inconsistent in meeting expectations for a category and need improvement.
In Grade 4, the students are evaluated in four major areas:
• Demonstrates an understanding of scientific concepts
• Applies practical skills during scientific investigations
• Participation
• Lab book
In Grade 5 the students are evaluated in five major areas
• Demonstrates an understanding of scientific concepts
• Applies practical skills during scientific investigations
• Participation
• Lab book
• Tests/Quizzes/Projects
