Chemical and Physical Changes
The first unit of 5th Grade Science will be the study of Chemical and Physical Change.
This unit is a perfect opportunity to further explore the Scientific Method which was introduced
in 4thGrade. The physical qualities and states of matter of water, oxidation, weathering and
exothermic/endothermic reactions are a few of the topics covered.
Focus
• Identify chemical and physical changes
• Construct a basic understanding of the Law of Conservation of Matter
• Conduct basic experiments to determine if matter has changed physically or chemically

Cells and Microorganisms
Classification
Focus
• Systems of classification to determine relationships
• Group organisms and communicate system used
• Group according to interactions and habitats
• Use classification to understand interactions, conservation, and identify/study new species

Exploring Landforms
Focus
• Make/use contour maps
• Create remote sensing land form boxes
• Probe other boxes and create tables and maps from the data collected, using Excel
• Become proficient in manipulating many Excel graph functions while creating a 3-D image of their landform
• Create supplemental illustrations and written descriptions for their landforms
